HUMBOLDT PARK COMMUNITY PLAN
Spring 2022
In my planning studio, I worked with a team of 19 other students to develop a neighborhood plan for Humboldt Park, a diverse, culturally significant, and rapidly changing Community Area on the west side of Chicago.
Over the course of the semester, we worked to understand the community's strengths and assets, as well as their growth areas and dreams for the future. This process involved data analysis, site visits, a deep dive into previous community plans, and listening to residents and stakeholders at community meetings. One particular challenge was answering a seemingly simple question: what is Humboldt Park? We learned quickly that the definition and boundaries of a "neighborhood" change depending on who you ask, and our plan intends to be sensitive to diverse perspectives of the many people and organizations who call Humboldt Park home.
Ultimately, we developed five pillars to guide our process and recommendations: Mitigating Displacement; Economic Development; Art and Culture; Education; and Climate and Health. I worked primarily on the Education team, delving into the history of neighborhood school closures and imagining how the local education ecosystem might better serve people of all ages and abilities.
Throughout the the planning process, I wore many hats. I led the Data Team during our initial neighborhood scope, produced all charts in the final document, edited all writing components for clarity, conciseness and tone, contributed to script writing, helped to design and present the midterm presentation, and conducted final copy edits of all deliverables.
The full plan, People's Tomorrow: A United, Resilient and Vibrant Humboldt Park, can be accessed here.

As part of our planning process, we attended Puerto Rican Agenda community meetings, went on self-guided walking tours of the neighborhood, and visited local businesses. (Photos by Dr. Ivis García.)
